How the Digital SAT Is Scored
Your raw score on each section is just the number of questions you got right — no penalty for wrong answers. That raw score is converted to a scaled score of 200-800 per section using College Board's official conversion table, and the two section scores add up to your total, 400-1600.
The Digital SAT adds one wrinkle: each section has two modules, and your Module 1 performance decides whether Module 2 is the easier or harder version. That routing affects your final scaled score independently of raw score, which is why the same raw score can land at different points in the range depending on which module you saw.
Worked example
A student answers 52 of 66 Reading & Writing questions correctly and 40 of 54 Math questions correctly.
Reading & Writing raw 52 → scaled score 600-660
Math raw 40 → scaled score 570-630
Total: 1170-1290
Common mistake
Assuming raw score converts linearly to scaled score — it doesn't. Raw score 1 and 2 on Reading & Writing both convert to the identical 210-220: one extra right answer changes nothing at the very bottom of the scale. But raw score 63 to 64 jumps the lower bound from 740 to 760, a 20-point swing from a single extra right answer near the top. The conversion compresses at the low end and stretches out near the top, so one more right answer is worth very different amounts depending on where you already are.

Why is my score shown as a range instead of one number?
The Digital SAT is adaptive: Module 1 of each section is the same for everyone, but your performance on it determines whether Module 2 is the easier or harder version. Two students with the same number of questions correct can land on different final scores if they were routed to different Module 2 difficulty — so a raw score alone can only tell you the range your real scaled score falls in, not the exact number.
Is there a penalty for guessing wrong on the SAT?
No. Your raw score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly — there's no subtraction for wrong answers, so leaving a question blank never helps you compared to guessing.
Why does Reading & Writing top out at 66 raw and Math at 54?
Those are the total scored questions on this released Digital SAT practice form -- 66 across the two Reading & Writing modules, 54 across the two Math modules. The exact count of scored questions can differ slightly between real test forms, though it stays close to these numbers.
What's the minimum and maximum possible SAT score?
Each section (Reading & Writing, Math) is scored 200-800, so the total ranges from 400 (the floor on both sections) to 1600 (a perfect 800 on both). This is a full-composite scale used since the SAT's 2016 redesign.
