How the Enhanced ACT Is Scored
Each of the four sections — English, Math, Reading, Science — is scored separately: the number of questions you got right (no penalty for wrong answers) converts to a scale score of 1-36 through that section's own official conversion table.
The Composite score is where the Enhanced ACT (effective 2025) changed: it's now the average of only English, Math and Reading, rounded to the nearest whole number. Science is still scored 1-36 and shown on your report, but it no longer factors into the Composite the way it did on the ACT before 2025.
Worked example
A student answers 32 of 40 English, 33 of 41 Math, 22 of 27 Reading, and 28 of 34 Science questions correctly.
English raw 32 → scale 26; Math raw 33 → scale 30; Reading raw 22 → scale 28; Science raw 28 → scale 30
Composite = round((26 + 30 + 28) / 3) = 28 (Science not included)
Common mistake
Averaging all four section scores, including Science, the way the ACT worked before 2025. Under the current Enhanced ACT, a strong Science score never raises your Composite and a weak one never lowers it — only English, Math and Reading do. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Science part of my ACT Composite score?
Not anymore. Under the Enhanced ACT (effective for national and state testing starting 2025), the Composite is the average of English, Math and Reading only. Science is still administered and scored 1-36, but it's reported as its own separate score, not folded into the Composite -- a real, recent change from the older 4-section-average ACT.
How exactly is the Composite rounded?
ACT averages your English, Math and Reading scale scores, then rounds to the nearest whole number -- any fraction of one-half or more rounds up. Because you're always averaging three whole numbers, the result only ever lands on an exact whole number or a repeating third (.33 or .67), never exactly .5, so in practice every .67 case rounds up and every .33 case rounds down.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the ACT?
No. Your raw score on each section is simply the number of questions you answered correctly -- there's no subtraction for incorrect answers, so it's always worth guessing rather than leaving a question blank.
Why do the four sections have different numbers of questions?
English, Math, Reading and Science are each built around different question counts on this released practice form -- 40, 41, 27 and 34 respectively -- and each has its own scale-score conversion table, so a raw score of, say, 20 means something different on each section.
What's the highest and lowest possible ACT score?
Each section scores 1-36, and the Composite (average of English, Math, Reading) also lands on a 1-36 scale, so a perfect score is a 36 Composite and the minimum for any attempted section is 1, never 0.
